The “Old Man Steve” Incident

December 2019, winter break. It was my first (and unfortunately last) trip to Surat via aeroplane.

That time, both my cousin and I were 9, and my eldest cousin brother was about 14. My sister

didn't have a dog at that time.

My aunt lived in a housing society on the 7th floor. The rooms in the house were luxurious (but

the washrooms were average). My sister’s room had a good bunk bed and a study table to the

left of it. I had a great time during my visit. We played games together, acted out different

characters, and did many other things.

But personally, no other memory of ours could ever beat this one.

During that visit, we played one of the many Minecraft rip-offs (because we’re broke), and one of

the modes in it was “Sky Islands”. I forgot the whole purpose of that gamemode, but I think it

was making bridges and conquering other islands and stuff.

The three of us were playing that gamemode (probably- my brother might also be

doomscrooling as well). My brother was on the top level of the bed, while my sister and I were

sitting just opposite each other on the lower level of the bunk bed.

In the game, I was roaming around the island till I started walking on the ‘bridge’ made by only

single wool blocks (Minecraft logic) till I found a guy with an avatar of an old man standing in

front of me, holding a violet-coloured block (I later found out that was called ”Obsidian”).

As a child, I liked that block -probably love at first sight- so much that I was intrigued by it.

At that time, the word “Steve” was stuck in my head. So somehow, I mustered up courage, and

aloud I spoke:-

“Hello, Old Man Steve, can you please give me thi- AAAAAAAAAH-”

The scream was due to that guy breaking the block below me, causing me to fall into the void

and die.

When my cousins heard this, both of them looked at me, perplexed, yet still laughing.

This was one of the funniest moments in my life, and I shall never forget it, ever.
